Used prefab buildings and prefab cabins for sale

Used prefab cabins for sale, alongside prefabricated classrooms, offices and clinics, most of it coming off education and healthcare estates. Buildings that became surplus when the estate around them changed rather than because they were finished, refurbished in our own yard and painted in the colour of your choice. They suit a construction site as readily as a school field, and a building that started life as a classroom often finishes it as a site office or a store.

The category

An old word for a broad family of buildings

Prefabricated simply means the cabin was manufactured somewhere else and delivered finished, set into position rather than built up where it stands. A single unit travels complete on a lorry, and a larger unit travels as complete sections that are joined once they land. By that definition almost everything on this site is prefabricated, which is why the word on its own tells you very little. What it usually signals in practice is public sector stock: teaching accommodation, clinics, administrative offices and staff facilities ordered by schools, trusts, health boards and councils.

That origin shapes what you get. Buildings specified for daily use by large numbers of people tend to have harder-wearing floors, wider doors, better circulation and more window area than general-purpose units. Structurally they overlap with modular buildings where they are multi-bay, and with portable buildings where they are single units.

What reaches the market from those estates is stock that became surplus when the organisation around it changed, not stock that was used up. It is refurbished in our own yard before it goes anywhere.

Where it comes from

Why serviceable prefabs keep reaching the market

Almost none of this stock arrives because it failed. It arrives because the estate around it changed.

Estate rationalisation

A trust consolidates three sites into one, a council closes a depot, a health board moves a service. Perfectly serviceable buildings become surplus overnight because the organisation no longer needs a building in that place, and the timescale for clearing them is usually short.

Rebuilding programmes

Permanent replacement accommodation is completed and the prefabricated block that served for years is suddenly redundant. These are often worth a close look, because the cabin was maintained continuously right up to the day it stopped being needed.

Decants that ended

Buildings brought in to cover a works phase, then left standing once the phase finished. The owner wants the ground back and has no second use, so the unit goes to whoever will move it.

Contractors and private sellers

Farms, businesses and individuals with a single prefabricated building standing idle in a yard. Smaller volumes, but frequently sound, and often the quickest transactions we handle.

Clearing something similar yourself? We buy from all of these sources. Start at sell portable buildings or sell modular buildings, and see the criteria we apply before you enquire.

Condition

What we do before it leaves the yard

Almost all of this stock is surplus rather than worn out. What we sell is refurbished first, so what arrives is a finished building rather than a project for you to take on.

Refurbished and painted
The work is carried out in our own yard rather than put out to somebody else, and the cabin is painted in the colour of your choice. All of it is far cheaper done here than after the unit has landed on your site.
Heating and certification
The majority of refurbished buildings leave the yard with new heating fitted, and electrical certification is supplied with it.
Photographs before it goes out
We always send photographs of the completed unit before it leaves us, and payment is made before delivery. Nothing goes on a lorry without you having seen what you are getting.
A look at it in the yard
You are welcome to come and view your completed refurbished building at the yard by arrangement, which is worth doing on anything where the fit-out is the bulk of the value.

If the layout or the finish needs changing for the way you intend to use it, say so at the enquiry stage. Flooring, decoration, partitions, doors and windows are all straightforward while the cabin is standing in the yard, and they get priced properly rather than becoming a job on your site.

Clearing a prefabricated building rather than buying one? We buy from these estates too — see what we take, and where a unit is genuinely past saving the honest route is disposal rather than sale.

What are you looking for?

What is standing in the yard changes from week to week, so the useful conversation starts with what you need rather than with a list. Describe the size, the layout and where it is going, and we will tell you what we can supply, in what condition, and what the building and the transport each cost.

Have something to trade in? Tick the part exchange box. A building coming the other way usually improves the arithmetic in both directions.

  • Two figures — the building and the haulage — so you can see what you are paying for
  • Refurbishment to your specification before delivery is usually possible
  • Part exchange welcome — a building coming the other way is part of the deal

Common questions

Used prefab buildings, answered

What is a prefab building?

A building whose structure and fit-out were completed in a factory, so it arrives finished and is set into position rather than built up in place. A single unit travels complete on a lorry; a larger unit travels as complete sections that are joined once they land. In practice the word usually describes prefabricated classrooms, offices and clinics from public sector estates. The construction overlaps heavily with modular and portable buildings, and the label often reflects who ordered it more than how it was made.

Where does used prefab stock come from?

Mostly estate rationalisation and rebuilding programmes. A school replaces older teaching accommodation, a trust consolidates onto one site, an NHS estate reconfigures services, or a council closes a depot. The buildings are surplus rather than worn out, which is why sound prefabricated units keep appearing on the market year after year.

What condition do the buildings arrive in?

Refurbished. The work is carried out in our own yard, and the cabin is painted in the colour of your choice. New heating is fitted to the majority of them and electrical certification is supplied with the building. We always send photographs of the completed unit before it goes out, and you are welcome to come and view it at the yard.

Are prefab classrooms worth buying second hand?

Frequently yes. They were built for daily use by a lot of people, so the floors, doors and finishes tend to be more robust than general-purpose stock. Ceiling heights and window areas are usually generous too. What matters is the structural condition and whether the layout suits what you intend to do with it.

Can you refurbish a prefab before delivery?

Usually, and it is the sensible order to do it in. Flooring, decoration, partitions, doors, windows, heating and lighting are all far easier while the cabin is in the yard. Work carried out after it has landed on your site costs more and interrupts whatever you needed the building for in the first place.
